Stress Management
This is a 3, 5 or 7 – day course. The SMET course is a special stress reduction programme developed as a means to manage stress, anxiety, depression and other common stress-related illnesses and diseases such as Coronary and Respiratory illness, Peptic ulcers, weakened immune system and High Blood Pressure, etc.
Stress according to Yoga, is imbalance. Imbalance is misery. At the mental and physical levels, it is excessive speed and thus a demanding situation which causes pain and leads to ailments and diseases. Imbalances at the emotional level manifests as upsurges that are caused by strong likes and dislikes. At the psychological level, the imbalances lead to conflicts and often manifest as petty and narrow ego-centric behaviour. Lack of holistic knowledge and a balanced outlook at the subtle levels are responsible for imbalances found at gross levels.
Modern man is faced with the increasing challenges of scientific progress and technological advancements. The fast, sensitive and sharp mind of modern man places great demands on his physical system or body which struggles , to cope with this relentless rush of change. Unable to meet the challenge, the physical system responds unfavorably with problems like hypersensitivity and stress which are greatly on the rise. This fact is strongly evident as seen on the pharmacy shelves in the form of more and stronger types of headache medications, anti-depressants, and bottles upon bottles of antacids for digestive problems, just to name a few.
How is man to correct this malady? What can Yoga do to enable man to live stress-free in a stress-filled environment? According to the ancient scriptures:
Laye Sambodhayet Cittam viksiptam samayet punah
Sakasyam vijaniyat samapraptam na calayet.
When the mind gets to a state of drowsiness, stimulate and awaken it;
as it starts speeding up and distractions set in, calm it down.
Do this again and again(Mandukya Karika 3-4).
The SMET program introduced in this course uses various stimulation/relaxation techniques and the practice Cyclic Meditation to enable the practitioner to experience great calmness of the mind and body as well as very deep and rejuvenating relaxation during the program. Such a practice, when incorporated in an individual’s own lifestyle provides us with the tools to meet and cope with unavoidable stresses that affect us all.
